Clinical Topics
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of therapy focused on evaluating and treating conditions related to the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues in the pelvic area. It helps improve function, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life.
Before Pregnancy
Pelvic floor physical therapy helps prepare your body for conception by improving pelvic alignment, addressing pre-existing issues like pelvic pain or incontinence, and building a strong foundation for a healthy pregnancy. Our gaol is to reduce your pain and maximize your functional capacity during pregnancy, improve your strength and experience during delivery, with all of that speeding and easing your recovery postpartum.
During Pregnancy
Pelvic floor physical therapy alleviates common discomforts such as back pain, pelvic pressure, and sciatica. It also improves posture, prepares the pelvic floor for delivery, and reduces the risk of complications during labor. Ultimately, your postpartum recovery is expedited and eased.
After Pregnancy
Postpartum pelvic floor physical therapy supports recovery by addressing issues like diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, and the complications of cesarian section. It helps rebuild core strength, restore function, and promote speed and ease of overall healing.
You can typically start pelvic floor therapy as early as 6 weeks postpartum, provided you have clearance from your healthcare provider. This allows time for your body to heal from childbirth. However, if you’re experiencing significant discomfort, pain, or other symptoms earlier, you can consult with a therapist to determine if gentle interventions might be appropriate sooner. Every recovery is unique, so it’s important to tailor the timing to your individual needs and health status.
- Urinary incontinence, including leakage during activities like coughing, sneezing, or exercise.
- Fecal incontinence or difficulty controlling bowel movements.
- Persistent pelvic pain or pressure.
- Pain during intercourse, tampon use, or pelvic exams.
- A feeling of heaviness or bulging in the pelvic area, which could indicate prolapse.
- Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowels completely.
- Diastasis recti (abdominal separation) or core weakness postpartum.
- Chronic lower back, hip, or tailbone pain.
- Discomfort or dysfunction during pregnancy or postpartum recovery.
- Pain following pelvic or abdominal surgery, such as a hysterectomy or prostatectomy.
General physical therapy focuses on broader areas of the body while pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues within the pelvic region. It involves specialized techniques such as internal and external muscle assessments, manual therapy, and tailored exercises to address issues like incontinence, pelvic pain, and postpartum recovery. These disciplines are in no way in conflict or mutually exclusive. In fact, we are fully educated and deeply experienced in general physical therapy. Our principal practitioner is even board-certified at the highest level in orthopedic care. The treatment plan we develop for you will be truly comprehensive of any and all physical therapy needs, and we always work as part of your overall healthcare provider team.
We treat a wide range of conditions, including incontinence, pelvic pain, diastasis recti, prolapse, postpartum recovery, prenatal discomfort, and sexual dysfunction. Explore our full list of conditions.

- Pelvic Floor Muscle Activation: Learning to properly contract and relax the pelvic floor muscles.
- Core Strengthening: Exercises like bridges and planks to engage the core and support pelvic stability.

Pelvic floor therapy is generally not painful. Your therapist will work within your comfort level, using gentle techniques to assess and treat the pelvic floor. Some discomfort may arise when addressing specific areas of tension or dysfunction, but your therapist will communicate with you throughout the process to ensure you feel safe and supported. Our goal is to make every session as comfortable as possible while working toward relief and improved function.
Internal exams are always optional, your consent is always asked prior, and we always explain in detail before proceeding with an internal exam. Internal exams can be an important and informative part of assessing pelvic floor function and providing effective treatment. If you’re uncomfortable or prefer not to have one, we will respect your preferences and focus on external assessments and techniques to address your concerns. Your comfort and consent are always prioritized.
Joint Action does not require a physician's referral to begin therapy under any circumstance, though we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with your other healthcare providers. In some cases we may request notes or contact information for specific providers.
If you do plan to seek out-of-network reimbursement from your insurance, we recommend checking with your insurance provider regarding out-of-network reimbursement requirements, including referrals, that may apply.
